Pediatrics Q & A

What are pediatrics?

Pediatric health care is medical care for newborns to young adults. The family medicine doctors at Indus Healthcare can transition your child from pediatric to adult medical care at the same practice when they no longer require a pediatrician.

Pediatric services cover a wide range of health care needs, including:

  • Preventive care (well-child visits)
  • Diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic illness (sick-child visits)
  • School, camp, and sports physicals
  • Behavioral care

How often does my child need to see a doctor?

While adults tend to schedule doctor appointments only when they’re not feeling well, children need to see their pediatrician regularly throughout their development. Your pediatrician at Indus Healthcare provides guidance about your child’s development, immunizations, and answers your questions about your children’s health.

Babies should visit the doctor at two weeks and two months after delivery and again at four months, six months, and nine months of age. From the time your child turns 1 through their 5th birthday, they should have well-child visits at the following intervals:

  • 12 months
  • 15 months
  • 18 months
  • 2 years
  • 2½ years
  • 3 years
  • 4 years
  • 5 years

You should also call your doctor at Indus Healthcare or use the online booking tool to schedule an appointment anytime your child is sick, or you have questions about their development or health.

What is a sick-child visit?

If your child is running a fever or otherwise not feeling well and not responding to your home remedies, call the pediatrician or use the online tool to make an appointment. Pediatricians at Indus Healthcare regularly check on children with flu symptoms, vomiting, allergies, cold symptoms, diarrhea, fever, eczema, or rashes.

What is family medicine vs. pediatrics?

Both family medicine doctors and pediatricians are qualified to treat children’s health care needs.

There are some benefits to choosing a family practice over a pediatrician. Family medicine doctors are educated on all stages of life, from infancy to adulthood and senior citizen care. By choosing a family medicine practice, your entire family can visit the same doctor, which gives your family practitioner full knowledge of your family’s medical history.

Children treated by a family practitioner can remain with the same practice as they become adults, rather than having to look for a new doctor.

Another benefit of a family medicine provider for females is the availability of women’s health care at the same practice. Girls just starting gynecological care are often anxious about this stage of their health care needs and could feel more comfortable with a doctor they’ve already seen as opposed to getting to know a new doctor.
